01. Overview

A Launch-Ready ESL Rollout for a New Supermarket Store

New W Mart wanted its new Marina Dubai store to open with a modern shelf-edge communication system from day one. The requirement was not limited to replacing paper labels. The project needed clear pricing, fast updates, department-specific display formats, rich visual communication for fresh produce, and a reliable workflow for store teams.

Technowave International handled the complete rollout using ZKONG Electronic Shelf Labels and color LCD shelf displays. The deployment combined compact 2.9” ESLs for roastery and deli, larger 4.2” ESLs for seafood counters, and 10” color LCD shelf displays for fruits and vegetables where product images, promotions, and price points needed stronger visibility.

02. Business Need

What New W Mart Needed

For a new store opening, shelf communication had to be correct, attractive, and ready before launch day. Manual paper labels would have increased operational pressure because fresh categories often require frequent price changes, daily updates, promotion changes, and quick product movement.

  • Fully digital shelf-edge communication ready on opening day.
  • Centralized price control to reduce manual paper label changes.
  • Better pricing accuracy across fresh counters and produce areas.
  • Modern shelf presentation with product images and promotions.
  • Lower paper usage and stronger alignment with go-green initiatives.
03. Project Challenge

Fresh Sections Required Different ESL Strategies

Fresh retail areas are more complex than standard grocery aisles. Roastery jars need compact labels that fit neatly. Seafood counters need readable labels in chilled and moist environments. Fruits and vegetables need larger, richer displays because shoppers compare prices, visuals, origins, and promotions quickly.

  • Different departments required different label sizes and mounting styles.
  • Fresh produce needed stronger visibility through 10” color LCD displays.
  • Seafood counters required clear pricing under chilled counter conditions.
  • Product mapping had to be accurate before store launch.
  • Store staff needed training for price push, promotion scheduling, and image updates.
04. Scope & Design

Department-Specific ESL and Display Selection

Technowave did not use one standard label format for the entire store. The ESL design was mapped to each department’s product type, customer viewing distance, display style, and operational workflow.

Roastery & Deli

2.9” ZKONG ESLs were used for compact items such as nuts, spices, and deli products where space is limited but price updates are frequent.

Seafood Counter

4.2” ZKONG ESLs were implemented for better readability in chilled seafood displays, helping customers view product names and prices clearly.

Fruits & Vegetables

10” color LCD shelf displays were installed to show product images, prices, PLU details, and promotional content in a more attractive visual format.

05. Delivery Approach

End-to-End Execution by Technowave

The project was delivered through a structured process that moved from demo and pilot validation to integration, staging, installation, training, and final launch support.

Step 1

Discovery and Live Demo

Technowave showcased ZKONG ESL capabilities, content options, label sizes, and department-specific use cases to validate the solution direction.

Step 2

Pilot and Department Fitment

Different ESL sizes were trialed in target sections to check visibility, mounting practicality, content readability, and update workflows.

Step 3

System Integration

The ESL middleware was connected with New W Mart’s pricing source to support centralized updates and accurate product-price communication.

Step 4

Supply, Staging and Pre-Configuration

Devices were procured, prepared, and pre-configured before site deployment to reduce installation delays during the store opening phase.

Step 5

On-Site Installation and SKU Mapping

ESLs and LCD displays were mounted section-wise, mapped to products and locations, and checked for signal, content, pricing, and display accuracy.

Step 6

Training and Launch Readiness

Store and HQ teams were trained on price push, promotion scheduling, image updates, and day-to-day ESL operations before go-live.

Opening Day Assurance

On October 30, 2025, Technowave’s team was present on the shop floor to verify that ESLs and LCD displays were showing the correct product images, prices, and content. Last-minute checks ensured the store opened with accurate, attractive, and fully digital shelf-edge communication.
