Choose the right anti-theft system

Every store is different. Entrance width, what you sell and how you want the store to look decide which system fits. These are the three options we install.

AM EAS gate pedestal at a store entrance
58 kHz acousto-magnetic

AM EAS gates

The most widely used retail anti-theft system. Pedestals at the entrance alarm when an active tag or label passes through.

  • Wide, reliable detection at busy entrances
  • Works with reusable hard tags and AM labels
  • Pedestal or concealed floor and ceiling options

Best for: Fashion, footwear, pharmacies, supermarkets

RF EAS pedestal
8.2 MHz radio frequency

RF EAS gates

A cost-effective option for smaller stores, with low-cost RF labels that can be built into packaging.

  • Lowest cost per label
  • Slim acrylic pedestals
  • Good fit for books, cosmetics and packaged goods

Best for: Bookstores, cosmetics, small stores

Overhead RFID anti-theft reader
UHF RFID, no gates

Overhead RFID anti-theft

Ceiling-mounted readers detect unpaid RFID-tagged items at the exit and tell you exactly which item left the store.

  • Open, gate-free entrance
  • Item-level alerts with SKU and time
  • Same tags power stock counts and POS checks

Best for: Luxury, premium fashion, flagship stores

AM vs RF vs overhead RFID

A quick comparison to help you shortlist. Many retailers start with AM gates and add RFID when they roll out item-level tagging for inventory.

How overhead RFID stops theft without gates

Readers mounted above the exit watch every item that leaves. Only unpaid items trigger an alert, so paying customers walk out freely.

  1. 1

    Tag every item

Each item gets an RFID tag or label, ideally at source or when stock is received.

  2. 2

    Sell at the POS

At checkout the item is marked as sold in your POS, so it no longer counts as unpaid.

  3. 3

    Detect at the exit

Overhead readers spot unpaid items leaving the store and trigger an alert with the item details.

Retail anti-theft FAQs

What is the best anti-theft system for a retail store?

It depends on your entrance, products and budget. AM EAS gates suit most fashion, footwear, pharmacy and grocery stores. RF gates are a lower-cost option for small stores. Overhead RFID suits premium stores that want an open entrance and item-level alerts.

How is RFID anti-theft different from traditional EAS?

EAS gates only detect that a tag passed through. RFID anti-theft identifies the exact product and gives real-time data such as SKU, item name and time of exit, so it improves both security and inventory visibility.

What is the difference between AM and RF security tags?

AM (58 kHz) systems give wider, more reliable detection and work well with hard tags. RF (8.2 MHz) systems use lower-cost labels and suit smaller stores and packaged goods. Tags must match the type of gate installed.

Where is the overhead RFID reader installed?

The reader is mounted discreetly above the store exit. This keeps the entrance open and clean, which is especially valuable for premium retail.

Does overhead RFID alert only on unpaid items?

Yes. The system integrates with your POS, so only items that have not been sold trigger an alert when they pass the reader.

Do you supply security tags, labels and detachers separately?

Yes. We supply hard tags, labels, AM/RFID dual tags, safers, lanyards, detachers and deactivators, with a new system or as refills for an existing one.

How much does a retail anti-theft system cost?

It depends on the number and width of entrances, the system type and the tags you need. Share your store details and we will send a quote.

Can RFID anti-theft reduce shrinkage?

Yes. Item-level alerts show exactly what is leaving the store, which helps you act quickly and find the products and times where losses happen.

Do you install anti-theft systems outside the UAE?

Yes. We supply and support retail anti-theft systems across the GCC, and we are the exclusive Sensormatic supplier in Oman and Bahrain.
